What is Group Therapy?

Group therapy is an important method of psychotherapy offering some unique features. It provides an opportunity to interact with others who understand or relate to what you are experiencing. Group therapy addresses issues around interpersonal difficulties, communication, and other difficulties that consistently occur in a social context. Common topics addressed in group therapy are grief, chronic pain, substance abuse, depression, anger, loneliness, relationships, low self-esteem, parenting and couples issues, and anxiety.

Weekly Ongoing Group Sessions Offered at the Midtown Practice

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) Adult Skills Group with Rena Semertzidis, LMSW, Mondays 6-7 pm

DBT Adult Skills Group, virtual group including the full DBT skill set of mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, interpersonal effectiveness, and middle path skills. A DBT skills group is similar to taking a class, whereby active participation is requested and homework is assigned weekly (but not graded!)

Through your participation in the group, you will learn to improve quality of attention and awareness, identify and regulate emotions, decrease problem behaviors, gain and maintain healthy relationships, identify goals and values, and build a meaningful life. You will be provided with DBT orientation materials as well as a PDF version of skills handouts.

We will start with orientation to the DBT group therapy model and the importance of a weekly commitment to maximize incorporation of skills into your everyday life. Subsequent sessions will start with introductions and a mindfulness exercise, review of “homework” assignments and module lessons assigned from previous meetings. New skills will be introduced and reinforced throughout the course.
